History
Greers Ferry Lake in north central Arkansas was created when the Little Red River was dammed up in the early 1960s. After completion, President John F. Kennedy dedicated the dam in person during a large ceremony. This dedication turned out to be his last public appearance before his fateful trip to Dallas. Heber Springs has since memorialized President Kennedy with a park just below the dam, an overlook just above the dam, and a bust statue to commemorate his life of service.
Today
The lake filled and now reaches, depending on lake levels, 30,000-40,000 acres. The award-winning reservoir serves as the national model for environmental cleanliness. In fact, Greers Ferry Lake is regularly listed as one of the most pristine in North America. The lake provides opportunities for millions of visitors each year, including swimming, cliff diving, boating, fishing, scuba diving, camping, and other water recreational activities.
